Essence? Well the model is based on the southern terminus of the Isle of Wight Railway. 

In the space available I had to compress the layout to fit. I also had to leave many features out and I brought back the turntable to save space (this was replaced with points in 1923 by the Southern). If you are old enough to have known the real Ventnor station you can have fun spotting all the liberties I have taken. You might also agree that I have captured something of the character of this unusual station built in a chalk quarry! 

The setting is from 1923 to 1939 when the Southern Railway ran the railway and there were still four-wheeled coaches and Brighton Terriers in service on the Isle of Wight.
